Nsombi Lambright-Haynes leads the Jackson Branch of the NAACP at a time when the work demands both urgency and discipline.

Her leadership reflects a focus on accountability, advocacy, and ensuring that the concerns of Jackson residents are not overlooked in decisions that shape the city. In that role, she has engaged directly in legal advocacy, serving as a plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging a 2022 state law that established a state-run police system in Jackson. While the lawsuit did not halt the creation of the force, it helped strengthen public awareness of residents’ rights and the need to monitor activity within the Capitol Police District, a work that the branch continues today.

 

Beyond the NAACP, Lambright-Haynes serves as Executive Director of One Voice, a statewide leadership development and policy advocacy organization headquartered in Jackson. The organization focuses on ensuring historically silenced communities have representation and influence in spaces of power, guided by principles of self-determination.

Under her leadership, One Voice has developed a growing network of grassroots leaders across Mississippi. More than 300 individuals have completed its nine-month leadership institute, and its annual leadership summit continues to bring together elected officials and community stakeholders to address complex issues facing communities across the state. That work has contributed to the development of a Black Action Agenda focused on policy priorities impacting Mississippi.

Lambright-Haynes’ work has been recognized with numerous honors, including the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2024), a Congressional honor from Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (2020), the Medgar Evers NAACP Award (2022), the Chokwe Lumumba Award for Advancing Social Justice (2019), and the Fannie Lou Hamer Humanitarian Award (2012).

She serves on the boards of the Mississippi Low Income Child Care Initiative, Mississippi MOVE, and IDEA, and is a Sisters on the Planet Ambassador. She is also a member of the Hinds County Children’s Coalition, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the NAACP, where she is a Life Member.

A graduate of Tougaloo College and Jackson State University, Lambright-Haynes remains rooted in Jackson, where she lives with her husband. She is the mother of an adult son.
