Jackson City NAACP Urges Voters to Stay Informed About Mississippi’s SHIELD Act

The Jackson City Branch NAACP is urging Mississippi voters to understand the SHIELD Act, verify their voter status, and remain vigilant about changes that could affect access to the ballot.
The SHIELD Act creates a new process for identifying people suspected of being noncitizens on Mississippi’s voter rolls, including the use of federal citizenship data. Voting rights advocates have raised concerns that database errors or mismatched information could cause eligible citizens to be flagged and required to provide additional documentation to remain registered.
For the Jackson City NAACP, the message is simple: No eligible voter should lose their voice because of inaccurate data, administrative errors, or unnecessary barriers.
Voters should take action now:
Check your voter registration status and make sure your name and address are correct.
Respond promptly to official notices concerning your voter registration.
Keep your voter information updated, particularly after moving or changing your name.
Help family members, seniors, and neighbors verify their voter status.
Vote. Do not allow confusion or fear about changes in election law to keep you away from the ballot box.
Election integrity and voting rights should not be competing principles. Mississippi can protect the security of its elections while also protecting every eligible citizen’s fundamental right to vote.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has published a SHIELD Act FAQ explaining the law, its implementation, and what Mississippi voters should know.
Stay informed. Stay engaged. Protect your vote.
