Voters Should Never Be Disenfranchised Because of Mail Delivery Delays

Statement on the SCOTUS Decision Regarding Mississippi's Absentee Voting Deadline

June 29, 2026 - The Jackson City Branch NAACP applauds today’s United States Supreme Court decision upholding Mississippi’s absentee ballot receipt deadline and rejecting efforts to invalidate ballots that are lawfully cast by Election Day.  This challenge represented a direct threat to voting access and an attempt to silence voters whose ballots may be delayed by circumstances beyond their control.

For many Mississippians mail voting is not a convenience. For seniors, people with disabilities, military members serving overseas, and rural residents, it is a necessity.  

Efforts to erect additional barriers to participation undermine public confidence and weaken our democracy. Today’s ruling sends a clear message that voters who play by the rules should not be disenfranchised because of delays in mail delivery.

The Jackson City NAACP remains committed to protecting, preserving, and expanding voting rights for all citizens. We encourage every eligible voter to remain engaged, stay informed, and exercise their constitutional right to vote in every election.
