Jackson City NAACP Releases Statement on the Governor's Veto of Infrastructure Improvement Projects in Jackson, Mississippi and Suffrage Bills
The Jackson City NAACP is deeply disappointed by Governor Tate Reeves’ recent decision to veto several critical infrastructure improvement projects in the Capital City and bills to restore voting rights to four Mississippians. Although House Bill 1707 was passed to clarify purposes and correct names from local projects approved during the 2023 Legislative Session, Governor Reeves again vetoed $2 million in appropriations for the Jackson Planetarium. Jackson, like many other urban areas, has struggled with aging infrastructure that poses significant risks to public health and safety and deters economic growth.
Furthermore, the veto of suffrage requests undermines the efforts to ensure fair and equal access to voting rights for all Mississippians. In a time when voting rights are under increasing threat across the nation, it is imperative that our state leaders support measures that promote inclusivity and democratic participation. The governor's decision to veto these requests sends a troubling message about the state's commitment to upholding the fundamental rights of its citizens.
We call on Governor Reeves to reconsider these vetoes and to work collaboratively with local leaders to find viable solutions that address the urgent needs of Jackson. Our community deserves leadership that prioritizes the health, safety, and democratic rights of its people. We urge all stakeholders to come together and advocate for the necessary investments in infrastructure and voting rights that will build a stronger, more resilient Jackson for future generations.
In the meantime, Jackson City NAACP remains committed to fighting for these critical improvements and will continue to advocate for policies that reflect the needs and aspirations of our community. We encourage residents to join us in this effort, making their voices heard and holding our leaders accountable.
