July 13, 2022 - Jackson, MS - Jackson City NAACP applauds the U.S. Department of Justice’s racial discrimination challenge against House Bill 1020.
The legislation strips the voting rights of citizens to elect judges, creating a two-tiered criminal justice system in Hinds County.
It is a clear attempt by the state of Mississippi to exert its authority over local government, a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause.
Jackson City NAACP has been at the forefront of the fight against HB 1020, and we stand with the Justice Department in prohibiting the state’s appointments of judges and prosecutors in Hinds County.
This challenge joins the NAACP’s federal case in which branch members are plaintiffs, including: Branch President Nsombi Lambright-Haynes, Frank Figgers, Charles Taylor, Derrick Johnson, Markyel Pittman, and Charles Jones.
